Cosmetic lip injections are a common noninvasive procedure in which one can achieve more defined or fuller lips in less than 20 minutes.  It is important you choose your lip injector with care. Board-certified dermatologists are expert lip injectors that are well versed in the anatomy and the types of fillers that can be used, and demonstrate superior technique to achieve natural, yet meaningful results.  

 

What are lip fillers? 

Injectable dermal fillers are gel-like substances composed of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in your skin that binds water, that are injected beneath the skin to restore lost volume, smooth lip lines or “wrinkled”, or enhance volume in the lips.  

What is the downtime after a filler procedure?

There is little to no downtime with fillers.  There is often some degree of swelling immediately post-procedure and for several days.  Icing the injected areas does decrease and shorten the duration of the swelling.

There is a risk for post-procedure bruising.  To minimize this risk, avoid any substances that can thin the blood, such as aspirin and NSAIDs, 2 weeks prior to your procedure. 

What should I avoid before having filler? 

Ingestion of the following substances should be avoided for 14 days before your procedure : Omega-3 fatty acids, Fish oil, Aspirin, NSAIDs (including Advil, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve), Vitamin E, Ginseng, Ginger, Gingko Biloba, Garlic, Green Tea, Alcohol, Salt.  Avoid dental work, including routine teeth cleaning, one month before and one month after treatment with fillers. 

How long do lip fillers last?

Typically 6-12 months.

Dermal fillers are FDA-approved and safe for injection. 

What do I need to let me doctor know prior to my procedure?

Please let your doctor know if you have a history of cold sores.  If so, your doctor will likely prescribe you an antiviral to prevent any cold sore breakouts.  

What should I expect during my filler procedure?

Numbing is applied 20-30 minutes prior to your procedure to minimize any discomfort.  The procedure takes approximately 10-20 minutes and is typically very well tolerated without pain.  There is lidocaine, a numbing agent.

What should I expect after my filler procedure?

After injections with fillers, temporary swelling, bruising, redness, or soreness in the treatment area can be experienced.  In order to reduce or minimize these side effects, we recommend applying ice-packs or cold compresses to the injection sites for at least 15 minutes immediately after treatment (and continue to apply them every hour if you are prone to bruising).

Is there anything I should avoid after my filler procedure?

While regular activity can be resumed immediately after injections, heavy exercise should be avoided for the remainder of the day in order to reduce the risk of swelling and bruising.  

Are there any strategies to avoid or limit bruising?

When should I contact the office?

Call the office immediately if you experience intense pain in the injected areas, severe bruising that is getting worse, or experience visual disturbances.

Do I need to follow up after my filler procedure?

It generally takes 1-2 weeks in order to determine your clinical response to treatment.  For lip fillers, we may recommend two sessions to achieve the desired outcome.

If it is your first treatment, it is advised that a follow-up appointment be scheduled at 2 weeks in order to assess your response to treatment

How Often Are Laser Resurfacing Treatments Needed?

Does PRP for Hair Loss Work?

Yes, PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is effective for treating hair loss. A 2015 placebo-controlled trial showed that PRP has positive therapeutic effects on androgenic alopecia without major complications or side effects. Who is a candidate for PRP hair loss therapy?

Does Dysport Help with Crepey Skin?

Dysport, a cosmetic injectable in the same family as Botox, does not help with crepey skin. However, it can help revitalize your appearance in other ways and address other signs of aging that often appear alongside crepey skin. You can use other solutions for crepey skin and still use Dysport to address certain signs of aging. 

Aging happens to everyone, however, there are effective options for rejuvenating your skin and restoring a younger look. Our dermatologists often recommend Dysport in Dallas for patients who are dissatisfied with the signs of aging. Keep reading to find out how Dysport can be used and what you can do instead to address crepey skin.  

So, What Is Dysport and How Can It Address the Signs of Aging?

Dysport is one of the newest treatments that uses botulinum toxin, like Botox. And, like Botox, it works by relaxing the muscles — when the muscles don’t contract, wrinkles can’t form. 

Although Dysport works much like Botox does, it’s not quite the same. Because Dysport’s botulinum toxin Type A molecules are smaller than the Type A molecules in Botox, it takes effect faster and spreads out more.  

In short, Dysport is a little more effective at easing the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Patients can generally expect their Dysport results to last about three to four months, which is comparable to Botox. However, as always, individual results can vary based on your unique skin type and skincare practices.

How Can Dysport Help the Eye Area?

The eye area is a popular source of frustration. As you grow older, you naturally begin to develop fine lines and wrinkles under the eyes, also known as crinkly under eye skin. While Dysport won’t address crepey skin, it can be an excellent choice for improving the look of aging around the eyes.  

Dysport can be used to address crow’s feet and under eye wrinkles, resulting in a more youthful appearance. However, it’s important to note— those who are prone to having eye bags or have naturally puffy eyes should not get Dysport injections to treat fine lines under the eyes (using it to address crow’s feet is still okay).  

Additionally, for those who have one eye that appears larger than the other, Dysport injections can help to achieve a more balanced, proportional look.  

 

How Can Dysport Improve the Mouth Area?

Although Dysport can be used to address smile lines, lip lines, and other fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth area, it’s important to understand that it is not effective as other treatments and therefore would not necessarily be the first treatment we’d recommend for treating those areas.  

Why? Because these treatments are neuromodulators that block nerve impulses, allowing the muscles to relax and therefore causing the skin above the muscle to soften and smooth out. So, you can run the risk of softening the muscles activated while smiling and can end up altering the expression and/or dragging the face down. The true problem that needs to be addressed is volume loss, which is better treated with other types of treatments/solutions.  

All of that being said, in some use cases Dysport can be used to treat fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth area. As with any treatment, we recommend speaking with a certified dermatologist like any of ours here at Dallas Dermatology to discuss what treatments would best suit your needs.  

What Treatments Can Address Crepey Skin?

As helpful as Dysport is for smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles, crepey skin on the neck or face may require treatments like Sculptra, a dermal filler designed specifically for addressing volume loss.  

Sculptra helps plump up and support skin that has become thinner and more delicate due to the aging process. In addition, Sculptra stimulates the production of new collagen fibers for longer-lasting results. 

However, if you’re not interested in dermal fillers, there are other options you can take like microneedling and red-light therapy, just to name a few basics. To find out what treatments would be best for your specific needs, it’s best to consult a dermatologist.
