Kybella

Kybella is a non-invasive fat removal treatment that can target several problem areas, including the double chin, bra bulges, and jowls-- all without surgery or significant downtime. This revolutionary injectable has helped thousands of patients safely and permanently eliminate unwanted pockets of fat. Dallas Dermatology Partners offers this innovative treatment, which can produce significant, confidence-boosting results in a matter of months.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is synthetic deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance made by the gallbladder that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. It is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment that eliminates fat cells in the submental area, more commonly known as a double chin, to enhance the profile. Submental fat is most often caused by genetics and is one of the most challenging places to contour without surgical intervention. Weight and hormonal fluctuations can also affect under chin fullness.

How does Kybella treatment work?

When injected into the adipose tissue beneath the chin, or another targeted area, Kybella destroys the walls of the fat cells. The dissolved fat becomes cellular debris that is gradually eliminated by the body’s circulatory and lymphatic systems over a matter of weeks. This results in a more sculpted and youthful chin profile. Once the targeted fat cells are destroyed, they cannot regenerate, making the procedure permanent. An added benefit of Kybella treatment is the skin retraction and tightening that follows.

What happens during the Kybella procedure?

The skin is cleaned and prepped with a topical numbing cream, then marked with a grid of dots to indicate exact injection sites. Most patients need 30-50 carefully placed injections. There is a slight burning sensation during the injections, but the entire procedure is over in less than 20 minutes.

What areas of the face and body can be treated with Kybella?

In addition to banishing double chin fat, Kybella effectively reduces pinchable fat rolls located above and below the bra line and around the armpit that are typically diet and exercise-resistant. Kybella also works synergistically with fillers and neuromodulators in a liquid facelift to shrink jowls and sculpt the jawline. Kybella can also be used in the buccal fat pads to slim and contour the lower face in those with a square or round face shape.

How many treatments are needed?

This depends on the area being targeted and the amount of fat loss desired. Most patients will require between two and four Kybella treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Since the injectable produces permanent fat loss, the treatments can be spread out for longer intervals.

What should I expect after the treatment?

Soreness and swelling are normal after treatment and diminishes on subsequent treatments. Cold compresses and ice packs may be recommended during your Kybella recovery, along with Motrin or over-the-counter NSAIDs for pain relief. Swelling may take 2-10 days to resolve, and patients should be back to their normal activities the same or following day.

What are the side effects of Kybella?

The most common side effects include swelling, redness, bruising, discomfort, temporary nodules, and hardness around the injected areas. Complications are rare, but possible risks include temporary numbness, nerve injury, and tissue cell death.

How long until I see results?

Kybella fat reduction results are not immediate but well worth the wait. You will begin to see visible results within four to six weeks, with continued improvements after each session. The full result is achieved three months after your last treatment session.
