Laser Resurfacing
Improving the appearance of acne scars, sun damage, and wrinkles with minimal downtime is possible with laser resurfacing at Dallas Dermatology Partners. Our practice offers the latest cutting-edge laser technology, including the Contour TRL, a tunable Erbium Yag laser, and the Halo laser by Sciton.
- The Contour TRL is an ablative resurfacing treatment that corrects signs of extensive sun damage, including deep wrinkles, creases, pigmentation irregularities, and rhinophyma. While mostly used for deeper, more aggressive procedures, Contour TRL laser resurfacing can be customized for superficial micro peels.
- The Halo is the world’s first Hybrid Fractional Laser that delivers ablative and non-ablative wavelengths. It is used to improve the health and appearance of mature and sun-damaged skin. The Halo laser treats a broad range of concerns, including uneven skin tone, fine lines, discoloration, actinic keratosis, scars, and rough skin texture.
Both laser resurfacing treatments are safe for all skin types, including darker skin tones, and can be used to rejuvenate the face, neck, chest, and other body parts.
Fractional Laser Resurfacing
Each laser resurfacing treatment is tailored according to your skin type and aesthetic goals. Our dermatologists can calibrate the depth and intensity of laser energy with micron precision, ensuring patient comfort and optimal results.
The Sciton Contour TRL removes the damaged outer layer of skin, stimulating new collagen production. Patients will see measurable improvements in texture, elasticity, and wrinkle reduction within two weeks of the laser skin resurfacing treatment and final results after six months when collagen remodeling is complete.
Thanks to its intelligent dual-wavelength energy delivery, Halo laser resurfacing promises smoother and more youthful-looking skin with only a few days of downtime. Improvements in skin tone, texture, and clarity are seen just two days after the procedure. Signs of UV damage begin to fade, and the skin takes on a luminous “Halo glow” that can be maintained for years with vigilant sun protection.
This is patient-specific and depends on the extent of photodamage and other skin concerns. Many patients will see dramatic improvements in just one erbium laser resurfacing treatment or Halo laser session. If several resurfacing treatments are needed, these sessions are typically spaced four to six weeks apart.
The Contour TRL ablative laser is approved to treat deep wrinkles around the mouth, age spots, fine lines, textural irregularities, rhinophyma, actinic keratosis, and uneven skin tone.
Our dermatologists use the Halo hybrid laser to address visible signs of UV damage and aging such as discoloration, rough texture, dyschromia, melasma, enlarged pores, and fine lines. Both the Contour TRL and Halo lasers are effective for improving the appearance of acne scars.
We strive to maintain patient comfort throughout laser resurfacing treatments. In addition to topical or local anesthetics, we also utilize cooling handpieces to minimize discomfort. Most patients describe the resurfacing procedure as a mild “rubber-band snap” sensation.
On average, ablative laser resurfacing with the Contour TRL lasts 20-45 minutes per session. Depending on the area of skin being rejuvenated, treatment with the Halo hybrid laser can last 15 minutes to over an hour.
As damaged tissue sloughs off and collagen remodeling occurs, you will see dramatic improvements in skin tone, texture, and firmness, with further improvements up to six months after the final treatment. Dark spots, fine lines, and static wrinkles will be much less noticeable. The treated area will be smoother since damaged layers are replaced with new, radiant-looking skin.
Laser resurfacing treatment can be safely performed on the face, neck, chest, arms, back, and legs. Our dermatologists will control the depth of laser penetration depending on skin thickness and the issues being treated.
Swelling and redness are normal. The skin will feel warm to the touch, similar to a sunburn. Less aggressive laser treatments will have shorter recovery periods. Downtime for the Halo laser is generally limited to three to six days. Since the Contour TRL is a much deeper resurfacing treatment, plan on a minimum of 7 to 14 days for recovery. Patients will have detailed instructions for applying moisturizer or occlusive ointments and sun protection.
We generally encourage patients to avoid laser resurfacing during the summer months since post-treatment skin is more UV sensitive and must be protected at all times. However, regardless of the time of year, patients should avoid direct sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen to maintain results.
The cost of laser resurfacing treatment depends on a variety of factors, including the type of laser being utilized, as well as the skin conditions and size of the area being treated. Laser resurfacing can deliver long-lasting improvements to your skin’s tone, texture, and overall glow—but “permanent” depends on how you define it. Results typically last anywhere from 1 to 5 years, depending on the depth of treatment, the laser technology used, and how well you care for your skin afterward.
Deeper resurfacing treatments can dramatically smooth wrinkles and fade sun damage, but the natural aging process continues. Think of laser resurfacing as a reset button—not a freeze frame. Regular skincare, sun protection, and maintenance treatments help you hold onto that refreshed look even longer.
Healing is part of the magic when it comes to results, but we know everyone wants to speed things up. Here’s how to help your skin bounce back:
- Follow your post-care instructions to the letter. We’ll give you a clear, personalized plan.
- Keep skin moisturized and protected. Healing skin loves hydration and hates sun.
- Skip the gym (just for a bit). Excess heat and sweat can irritate treated areas.
- Don’t pick or peel. Let the skin shed naturally—trust the process!
- Eat well and rest. Your skin heals faster when you’re rested and nourished.
Most patients feel “socially ready” within a few days to a week, depending on the type of laser used. Most of our lasers require zero downtime.
This depends on the type of laser and your treatment plan. Some lasers gently refresh the outermost layers of your skin (think: tone, texture, early signs of aging). Others go deeper to rebuild collagen and target more stubborn issues like wrinkles, scars, or sun damage. For example, a fractional laser like Halo can reach both shallow and deeper layers at once—kind of like a double-action polish and reboot. Your dermatologist will tailor the depth to your skin’s needs and your desired outcome.
Laser resurfacing is safe and effective for many people—but it’s not for everyone. You might not be a good candidate if:
- You have active acne, an open wound, or an ongoing skin infection
- Your skin is very dark (certain lasers may pose a higher risk of pigmentation changes—though we can often recommend safe alternatives!)
- You’ve used Accutane within the past 6-12 months
- You’re prone to keloid scarring
- You’re pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have certain autoimmune or immune-compromising conditions
During your consultation, we’ll assess your skin type, medical history, and goals to ensure laser resurfacing is a safe, smart choice for you.
Yes—and we often recommend it! Some of the most effective treatment plans combine multiple technologies to get the best results. For example:
- Moxi + Halo: A popular pair that blends gentle resurfacing with deeper collagen stimulation
- BBL + Moxi: Moxi and BBL Hero work synergistically to promote even-toned, radiant skin without significant downtime including age spots, redness, & rough texture.
- Lasers + Injectables: Treatments like Sculptra, Skinvive, dermal fillers, or Botox/Dysport can amplify your results by targeting volume loss, lines, and skin texture from different angles
Think of it like a skincare symphony—each treatment plays its part. When timed correctly and customized to your skin, the effects are harmonious and long-lasting.
