Sculptra

Sculptra is an excellent option for restoring a youthful appearance with effortlessly natural-appearing results. This poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) dermal filler does more than plump up wrinkles and replenish age-related fat loss. It is a biostimulatory agent that triggers your own body to produce collagen-- the protein that provides the structural support for our skin.

Sculptra filler is a long-lasting solution for many aging concerns since it helps the skin rejuvenate naturally by strengthening its inner structure and replacing lost collagen. Dr. Lauren Dickson, Board Certified Dermatologist and Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, asserts that it is her favorite treatment for this very reason. It provides global improvement in volume and skin quality, resulting in what she calls the “Sculptra Glow.”

"Think of it as your foundation and maintenance for anti-aging. The elixir of youth!” --Dr. Lauren Dickson, Board-Certified Dermatologist

Did we mention it can also be used on other parts of the body to revitalize loose skin around the knees and arms, smooth chest wrinkles, and even perk up the buttocks?

Traditional dermal fillers consist of hyaluronic acid, a gel-like compound that attracts water and provides immediate volumizing results. Sculptra works differently as it targets the deeper layers of the dermis, where it stimulates collagen synthesis. With time, the skin’s underlying structure becomes thicker and more elastic, helping to restore more youthful contours.

Sculptra begins to work within a few weeks after injection and gradually enhances collagen levels to improve the skin’s structural foundation. Since collagen regrowth takes time, results do not occur overnight. Most patients will see gradual improvements in fullness and volume within three to nine months. This is an added benefit, as there is no chance of overcorrecting, and results will be subtler.

“The results are very natural, and full-face volumization and improvement in skin texture and fine lines can be achieved with one product. The Sculptra “glow” is a very real thing, and that is why it’s my product of choice when rejuvenating my own face,” says Dr. Dickson.

The skin is cleansed and numbed with a topical anesthetic cream. Because it is injected into the deep dermis, the filler contains lidocaine to minimize any discomfort. After the injections, the site is gently massaged to help the poly-L-lactic acid molecules distribute evenly for optimal results. Most treatments take less than an thirty minutes here in our Dallas Dermatology office.

Sculptra lasts a minimum of two years and even longer when a maintenance schedule is followed. This longevity is another key advantage of this injectable filler.

Our dermatologists utilize this collagen-boosting filler in a wide range of non-surgical procedures, including:

  • Liquid facelift: A combination of Sculptra, neuromodulators, and Kybella can provide full face revolumization while minimzing lines, plumping wrinkles, contouring features, and lifting sagging skin.
  • Smooth wrinkles: Sculptra can be used to smooth etched wrinkles on the cheeks and around the mouth caused by smiling.
  • Non-surgical butt lift: A non-invasive procedure that provides lift and increases the size and shape of the buttocks with targeted injections of Sculptra.
  • Decollete rejuvenation: Sculptra fills in wrinkles caused by sleeping positions and sun damage that frequently develop in the décolletage. Laser therapy with IPL can be added to treat redness and uneven pigmentation.
  • Knee and arm laxity rejuvenation: Sculptra can be used to improve the appearance of loose or sagging skin around the knees and on the upper arms.
  • Jaw Contouring:  Sculptra can be used to define the jawline or get rid of sagging jowls.
  • Sculptra Neck Rejuvenation: Injecting Scultpra stimulated collagen growth and creates a neck tightening effect

Sculptra is a biocompatible filler that is gradually absorbed by the body. The best way to minimize adverse side effects is to have injections performed by a skilled dermatologist. The most commonly reported side effects of this filler include temporary redness, swelling, soreness, and bruising along the injection sites. Ice packs or cold compresses can help alleviate tenderness and swelling, while topical arnica and apple cider vinegar can heal bruises faster.

Avoid taking the following medications and supplements at least 14 days before and 1-3 days after your Sculptra treatment to minimize bruising: Omega-3 fatty acids, Fish oil, Aspirin, NSAIDs (including Advil, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve), Vitamin E, Ginseng, Ginger and Gingko Biloba.

Massage the treated areas with firm pressure for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for at least 5 days to ensure the product remains evenly distributed in the injected areas and prevent nodules from developing. “It is easy to remember as the 5-5-5 rule.” Try and sleep on your back for at least three days post-treatment. If you had Sculptra injected near the tear troughs, avoid wearing tight goggles or putting pressure on this area for one month.

This will vary based on individual concerns, but most patients seeking facial rejuvenation will benefit from two to three Sculptra treatments spaced four weeks apart. The number of vials required will depend on your needs and desired treatment goal. Once you achieve the desired result, we recommend maintenance every 1-2 years to continue to stimulate collagen production.
