Is Botox or Dysport Better for a Lip Flip?

Both Botox and Dysport can be used for a lip flip and both are equally effective.  Both of these types of injectables in Dallas will create the same results, but Dysport is sometimes preferred because it works faster, which means you can enjoy more beautiful lips sooner.

Cosmetic injectables can help you transform your appearance in many different ways. As an anti-aging treatment, many people are unaware that neuromodulator injectables like Botox and Dysport can address more than just wrinkles; they can also be used to rejuvenate the lip area.

Talk to a dermatologist to find out if a lip flip is right for you.

Comparing Botox and Dysport

Both Dysport and Botox in Dallas are in the same family of treatments. These are neuromodulators that work by relaxing the muscles in the targeted area.

Traditionally, neuromodulators are used to minimize wrinkles, such as the horizontal forehead lines. However, these injectables can also be used for other cosmetic purposes, such as a lip flip, and medical treatments, such as for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder.

The differences between Botox and Dysport are subtle. While both are made from botulinum, there are slight differences in the composition of their proteins. When injected, Dysport tends to spread out a bit more than Botox, which is more likely to stay in a highly localized area.

For the purposes of a lip flip, the main difference between the two is the time of onset (more on that below).

lip injections

Which is Right for You?

When it comes to achieving a lip flip, Botox or Dysport are both excellent options. The main difference it takes 3-5 days for Botox to take effect and create the desired results. In contrast, Dysport has a much shorter onset. You can generally expect to see results within two days. The results of your lip flip when performed with either Dysport or Botox will last about eight weeks.

Lip Flip: Is It Right for You?

A dermatologist might recommend a lip flip if you’re troubled by the appearance of a thin upper lip. With age, the lips can naturally lose volume, which means that when you smile the upper lip appears much smaller than usual.

In addition, some people naturally have a thin upper lip with strong muscle that raises the lips, regardless of age, creating the appearance of a “gummy smile.” No matter what causes it, a lip flip can create the appearance of a fuller upper lip.

A lip flip isn’t the same treatment as lip injections with dermal fillers, which increase the volume of the lips. While dermal fillers are great for volumizing the bottom lip, they can look unnatural when used in excess on the upper lip.

In contrast, injecting a neuromodulator like Dysport into the area just above the upper lip will temporarily relax those muscles. This makes the upper lip look fuller.

What Is the Best Age to Start Sculptra?

The best age to start Sculptra is before you start noticing significant signs of aging, like volume loss, fine lines and wrinkles, and loss of elasticity. Many individuals wait until they are in their 40s to start a rigorous anti-aging routine that includes dermal fillers like Sculptra.

However, it’s not necessary to wait, and in fact, there are benefits to embracing an anti-aging routine much earlier in life. Talk to a dermatology provider to find out if this method of noninvasive chest rejuvenation could be right for you.

What If I’m Already in My 40s or Older?

If you are in your 40s or later, starting Sculptra right now is best. Like all dermal fillers, Sculptra works by plumping up the skin to minimize the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and to restore areas characterized by volume loss.

However, Sculptra also works in another way. It functions as a biostimulatory agent that triggers the bodily mechanism that produces collagen. In other words, using a Sculptra filler will convince your skin to make more of its own collagen.

Remember that collagen is one of the proteins that is essential for the health and structural integrity of the skin, and the loss of collagen is one of the main factors that causes skin to look old.

sculptra injections to temples and lateral face
Sculptra to Temples and Lateral Face by Dr. Dickson

Why Start Using Sculptra Fillers Earlier in Life?

Sculptra is approved for use in people at least 18 years of age, which means you don’t have to wait until you’ve already begun to see the signs of aging. In fact, if you wait to start Sculptra until you’re 45, you will have already lost up to 25% of your youthful collagen.

Why wait to address the signs of aging when you can take a more proactive approach? Beginning Sculptra treatments by your mid-to late 20s or at least by your 30s can provide a preventive effect. Dr. Dickson prefers to start her patients as soon as those early signs of loss of elasticity and volume loss occur to slow down the aging process, preventing the need for more invasive or involved interventions later in life.

You’ll build up your skin’s stores of collagens early on, effectively delaying the effects of time, gravity, and sun damage. With Sculptra fillers, you can enjoy better definition and more youthful skin long into your later years.

“Think of it as your foundation and maintenance for anti-aging. The elixir of youth!” Dr. Lauren Dickson, Board-Certified DermatologistDr. Dickson, board certified dallas dermatologist

How Long Can Sculptra Last?

One key consideration when determining which dermal filler is right for your needs is its expected duration. Sculptra is one of the longer lasting injectables available on the market.

With each Sculptra treatment you receive, you can expect it to continue to work its magic under your skin for up to two full years.

What Else Should I Know About Sculptra?

Although Sculptra is commonly used as an anti-aging treatment for the face, this injectable has become a favorite of dermatologists and patients alike thanks to its versatility. It also recently received FDA approval for improvement in skin texture that we have always been aware of as the “Sculptra glow.”

For example, if you’ve lost a great deal of weight, you may have loose, sagging skin in areas like the jawline, knees, and upper arms. Sculptra treatments can address these issues. It can even be used for a nonsurgical butt lift or softening the appearance of the “hip dip”!

Does Dysport Work On Frown Lines?

Yes, if you want to reverse the hands of time, unlock your youthful radiance, and erase facial wrinkles, it’s time to consider Dysport for frown lines.

This in-demand treatment is perfect for individuals seeking a quick and convenient way to reduce fine lines with long-lasting and natural-looking results. Similar to Botox and other injectable treatments, Dysport targets and reduces muscle activity below the skin to prevent the formation of lines and to smooth out the overall appearance of your skin.

Whether you’ve received Dysport in Dallas in the past or are considering new options for the first time, our experts at Dallas Dermatology Partners work with you to determine and develop a customized treatment plan that will have you feeling confident, natural, and beautiful. Schedule a consultation with our trained experts to learn more about how Dysport can help you.

What are frown lines?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, there are many factors that can contribute to the creation of wrinkles and fine lines, including sun damage, smoking, and decreased collagen production due to aging. Another way you can get frown lines is by making facial expressions like smiling, raising your eyebrows, squinting in the sun, or pouting.

This is because your underlying muscles contract and expand, causing your skin to crease. Over time, these repetitive contractions can leave permanent lines around the mouth, between the eyebrows, and near the corners of the eyes.

While wrinkles and frown lines are a normal part of your body’s aging process, they can have a significant impact on your appearance and your self-esteem — but thankfully it doesn’t have to feel that way! Our board-certified dermatology experts recommend Disport injectables to help you achieve a youthful, natural look that makes you glow inside and out.

What results can I expect?

There’s a reason why Dysport is one of our most sought-after wrinkle-reducing injectables in Dallas. This non-surgical, minimally invasive cosmetic treatment can slow down the formation of deeper lines and wrinkles and even prevent them from becoming more pronounced over time.

You will begin to see the look of smoother, plumper skin within a few days of initial injection, with full results showing in as little as two weeks and lasting as long as four months. Our physicians will work with you to determine the right treatment plan to keep you looking radiant and healthy at any age.

Are Dysport injections right for me?

Before receiving Dysport treatment, you’ll meet with one of our highly qualified dermatologists to discuss your medical history and skin goals, review the procedure and side effects, and determine whether you’re a suitable candidate for Dysport.

While Dysport is generally a safe and effective treatment for reducing the appearance of frown lines, you may be considered a good candidate if you:

  • Have noticeable lines
  • Are in overall good health
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have no active skin infections
  • Do not have allergies to Dysport ingredients

Can Dysport Help With Teeth Grinding & Jaw Clenching?

Yes! While Dysport is more commonly known for its ability to reduce wrinkles, our experts at Dallas Dermatology Partners have found it to be incredibly beneficial to individuals who suffer from involuntary teeth grinding and jaw clenching. Because of this, we often recommend it as a treatment for certain medical conditions.

Tired of waking up from a good night’s sleep with a headache or jaw pain? If you grind or clench your teeth, you may have already tried mouthguards to protect and prevent dental problems, made lifestyle changes to improve sleep apnea, or begun stress management techniques to reduce anxiety. But if those have only provided temporary relief, it might be time to consider a new approach— Dysport treatment might be the right option for you.

How Does It Work?

Dysport is a form of botulinum toxin, similar to Botox, and works by temporarily relaxing the muscles in the jaw that control movement. It blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles and helps to reduce activity and tension associated with temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) and teeth grinding (bruxism). Because it targets the underlying muscle activity, Dysport can help to break the cycle of clenching and alleviate discomfort.

botox dysport for tmj masseter muscle

What Else Can It Treat?

In addition to traditional cosmetic procedures, Dysport has also been used to assist with providing relief for certain medical conditions. Beyond TMD and bruxism, patients may consider the application of Dysport for muscle spasms, excessive sweating, and eye twitches or movements.

How long does Dysport last for TMJ?

Most patients experience a gradual onset of relief as muscles respond to the treatment, and can notice a reduction in jaw tension and grinding within a few days. While the effects can last up to 6 months, our practitioners may recommend a series of repeat injections to help ensure effectiveness and continued relaxation of the jaw.

Is It Right For Me?

When you meet with our qualified health professionals at Dallas Dermatology Partners, we will discuss your medical history, assess the severity of your condition, and tailor the treatment plan to your individual needs. We will share the potential risks based on your specific health concerns and establish a personalized treatment plan that will make it easier to enjoy daily activities, eat comfortably, and improve your quality of life.

Are There Other Benefits?

If you’ve been living with chronic jaw pain, you know it can have a significant impact on your mood, your sleep, and your productivity. Often, our patients have not only noticed an improvement in jaw mobility, but also increased focus, less intense headaches, fewer disturbances at night, and more balanced stress levels.

In addition, clenching the jaw contributes to aging of the lower face and jowl formation. Thus, starting Dysport injections in the masseter muscle early on can be a tool of slowing down aging in this location.

When you book a  Dallas Dermatology appointment, you can rest assured knowing that your health will be in the hands of experienced professionals who have your best interest at heart. Is Daxxify Better Than Botox?

Daxxify, a type of neuromodulator, is FDA-approved to treat glabellar lines. These are the wrinkles commonly referred to as “frown lines” that appear as vertical lines between the eyebrows.

When Daxxify first became available, it was widely touted as an alternative to Botox. This begs the question: Is Daxxify better than Botox injections?

“In reality, Daxxify has not been lasting as long as advertised and it is more expensive.”  – Dr. Lauren Dickson

Dr. Dickosn Dallas dermatologist

Not Necessarily Better, Just Different

Before comparing and contrasting the two, it’s helpful to know exactly what they are. Both Botox and Daxxify are in a family of neuromodulators, along with Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau.

These neuromodulators work by relaxing the muscles in the treated area. This temporarily prevents contractions, which significantly reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Daxxify isn’t necessarily better than Botox, and Botox isn’t necessarily better than Daxxify. They each offer their own benefits. Our dermatologists will review your goals with you to determine which injectable would work best for your needs.

Similarities Between Daxxify and Botox

Daxxify and Botox share many similarities, aside from the fact that they are both neuromodulators. Both injectables are highly effective at treating wrinkles, and both have received FDA approval, with favorable safety profiles.

In fact, both Daxxify and Botox did not cause any serious treatment-related side effects during clinical trials. The most common temporary side effect was a headache.

Length of Duration of Results

Both Daxxify and Botox provide temporary results, which means you’ll need to continue to get injections in order to enjoy younger-looking skin. However, the length of the duration of their results is different.

Whereas the results of Botox tend to last for about three to four months for most patients, Daxxify users may continue to see results for six months—and even up to nine months in some cases. The long-lasting results are due to a difference in formulations; Daxxify contains a unique protein that Botox lacks. However, in reality these Daxxify results have not been lasting as long as advertised and Daxxify.

Although it may be tempting to try the longer-lasting injectable first, your dermatologist might instead recommend that you first try Botox if you’ve never received a neuromodulator before. This allows you to assess whether you like the results before you consider using a longer-lasting injectable.

Treatment Areas

Another significant difference between these two injectables is where they may be used. Currently, Daxxify is only FDA-approved to treat the glabellar lines between the eyebrows.

In contrast, Botox is FDA-approved to treat glabellar lines, horizontal forehead lines, and crow’s feet. Botox is also FDA-approved for medical (non-cosmetic) uses, such as the treatment of chronic migraines, muscle spasms, and some types of urinary incontinence.

It’s expected that, in the future, Daxxify may receive FDA approval to treat areas other than the glabellar lines. It should also be noted that it is customary for clinicians to recommend and use medications for reasons that aren’t yet approved by the FDA (off-label usage).

How Do You Know When You Need More Botox?

Botox is highly effective at minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It offers a refreshed, younger appearance, but to maintain your results, you’ll need to get periodic touch-ups.

How often should you schedule Botox injections? Since every patient is a little different, it’s best to defer to the guidance of your clinician, but the following are some general guidelines.

Here’s How Often to Schedule Botox Injections

Although Botox gets to work right away, you won’t see the full results of your treatment until about 5-7 days after receiving the injections. Most people can enjoy their results for about 3-4 months. You’ll see the best results longest lifespan of your results with proper skin care.

It may be tempting to schedule another appointment as soon as 3 months have passed, but before you do, you should consider whether you actually need it. If you’re still seeing the “new you” in the mirror, then you may be able to get by with waiting a while to schedule a touch-up appointment.

On the other hand, if you’ve noticed that the fine lines and wrinkles are beginning to reappear, then you can call the dermatology office to request an appointment. Botox injections are particularly popular for:

  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet (around your eyes)
  • Lipstick lines

botox dysport injection sites

How Often Should You Get Botox for Medical Purposes?

Botox is widely used to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and to delay their formation as part of a “prejuvenation” routine. Yet, it’s also approved for certain medical uses.

For example, if you have temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), likely accompanied by bruxism (teeth grinding and jaw clenching), you may receive Botox injections into the masseter muscles as therapeutic treatment. The Botox injections will reduce the clenching of the jaw muscles, providing pain relief (and in some patients, relieving related tension headaches connected to TMD, as well).

Botox can also be given to patients with chronic tension headaches without TMD. If you’ve noticed that your tension headaches are coming back, it may be time to schedule an appointment.

Generally, Botox for therapeutic purposes can be given as often as every 3 months. If the 3-month mark is approaching and you’re noticing the signs that Botox is wearing off (e.g., jaw tiredness and tightness), then it’s time to schedule an appointment.

How Do I Make the Results of Botox Last as Long as Possible?

It may be possible to make your results last a bit longer than they otherwise would by taking a couple of simple precautions. For example, if you smoke, consider talking to your doctor about smoking cessation methods. Smoking increases wrinkle formation and attacks the overall health of the skin.

Alcohol is another big contributor to aging skin because it dehydrates your body. Finding ways to reduce your alcohol intake will not only improve your complexion but your overall health, too.

This one may be more obvious, but it’s easy to forget— avoid excessive sun exposure when you can, and if you are going to spend significant time outdoors, be sure you are wearing sunscreen on all exposed areas of skin. It is recommended to be using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 for daily use. Additionally, a broad-spectrum formula that protects against both UVA and UVB rays is ideal.

You can also cover up on warm days with thin, breathable clothing made from fabrics like linen, wear hats that shade your face (and shoulders if you can), and wear sunglasses to keep you from stressing your face muscles from squinting.

Can Laser Therapy and Microneedling Be Used Effectively Together?

Laser therapy and microneedling can be used effectively together to produce optimal skin rejuvenation. Both procedures stimulate collagen production, and the results will be dramatic. Your dermatologist may recommend both treatments in the same appointment or staggering them. You will receive personalized recommendations based on your aesthetic goals and unique health history.

Regardless of whether you undergo laser skin treatments and microneedling at the same appointment or in two separate sessions, you can expect a remarkable transformation at Dallas Dermatology Partners.

How do laser therapy and microneedling work together?

By themselves, laser skin treatments and microneedling can help you enjoy younger-looking skin. You will notice improvements in texture, tone, and firmness.

For optimal results, many patients prefer to combine these treatments for skin rejuvenation. For example, if you combine the Moxi laser and the Genius RF Microneedling system, you will see a near-instantaneous improvement in the texture of your skin. These treatments work effectively together to stimulate new collagen production, tighten skin to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and a rapid reduction of areas of hyperpigmentation and skin damage. In contrast, having only a Genius treatment by itself may require a wait time of up to three months before you can see the full result.

In some cases, the dermatologist may recommend combining both treatments on the same day. Other patients may be best served by staggering the treatments. Discuss your goals and skin health history with the dermatologist to determine which treatment schedule works best for you.

First, however, your dermatologist will determine whether one or both treatments are appropriate for you. Microneedling and laser skin resurfacing complement each other effectively and safely.

moxi laser vs genius microneedling venn diagram

How do laser skin treatments work?

Different laser skin resurfacing treatments include the Sciton Moxi laser, Halo laser, and BBL Hero laser. For example, the non-ablative Sciton Moxi laser is appropriate for patients with post-inflammatory pigmentation and works wonders for those interested in skin “prejuvenation.”

On the other hand, the BBL Hero laser is ideal for patients who desire minimal downtime. Your dermatologist will discuss your skin goals to determine which is right for you. Although each laser is a little different, they all work similarly; they deliver an intense beam of light energy to reveal the new skin underneath and stimulate collagen production.

Laser skin treatments can help you look younger and more vibrant by:

  • Minimizing the appearance of lines and wrinkles
  • Improving skin tone and texture
  • Addressing photo-damage areas, such as sunspots
  • Reducing other blemishes, such as acne scars

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling creates areas of micro-damage to trigger the skin’s natural healing and rejuvenation processes. It uses very tiny, sterile needles to prick the skin gently. This stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. As a result, the skin looks smoother and firmer. After a series of microneedling treatments, you can expect to see improvements in the following issues:

  • Enlarged pores
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Loose, crepe-like skin
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Rough skin texture
  • Discoloration
  • Minor scars and stretch marks

Some patients may opt to undergo RF microneedling, which introduces radiofrequency energy and further stimulates collagen and elastin production.

Dallas Dermatology Partners is pleased to offer Genius RF Microneedling, which combines microneedling with fractional radiofrequency energy to create younger-looking skin. The smart handpiece of this system enables our dermatologists to adjust the RF penetration depth to each individual’s skin thickness and texture, delivering a fully customized treatment.

While you will notice some results immediately after receiving Genius RF treatments, it can take up to three months to see the full result. This is because it takes time for the body to produce new collagen.

Can You Combine Moxi and Genius Microneedling?

Yes! Often, dermatology patients want to know if one treatment could help them achieve all their skincare goals. However, combining multiple types of treatments, such as Moxi and Genius RF Microneedling, can be beneficial because, together, they can correct a wide range of issues. Together, they are even more effective at rejuvenating and transforming the skin. To find out if Moxi and Genius Microneedling could work for you, contact Dallas Dermatology Partners to consult with an experienced clinician.

What is Moxi and what can it treat?

The Moxi laser treatment uses a controlled, fractional laser to rejuvenate the skin. This non-ablative laser can address many common signs of aging and create a more youthful-looking complexion. It’s also safe for all skin types and can be used as an anti-aging or a “prejuvenation” treatment (performed before the signs of aging are easily discernible).

The Moxi laser can address the following skin issues:

  • Dull or uneven skin tone
  • Mild scars, including acne scars
  • Melasma
  • Mild sun damage
  • Poor skin texture, including large pores
  • Fine lines and wrinkles

In addition, Moxi requires minimal downtime.

moxi laser vs genius microneedling

What is Genius Microneedling and what benefits does it offer?

Genius RF Microneedling is an effective anti-aging treatment. It uses needles to create micro-damage to the skin, which stimulates collagen and elastin production. In addition, it takes an innovative approach to the traditional microneedling treatment by introducing radiofrequency energy.

This treatment offers the following benefits:

  • Minimize hyperpigmentation
  • Reduction in the appearance of stretch marks
  • Smoother, younger-looking skin
  • Fine line and wrinkle reduction
  • Skin tightening and firming
  • Improvement in the appearance of acne scars
  • Minimized appearance of pores
  • Improvement of skin tone and texture

Like Moxi laser treatment, this treatment also offers minimal downtime.

Maximize your skincare results by combining treatments

Moxi laser treatment and Genius RF Microneedling can achieve remarkable results. Combined, they offer more comprehensive benefits because they target different layers of the skin. The Moxi laser targets the uppermost layers—the epidermis and the topmost part of the dermis. In contrast, Genius RF Microneedling works deeper within the skin—far into the dermis—offering effective contouring and tightening.

When these two treatments are combined, patients can look forward to comprehensive skin rejuvenation. Moxi and Genius can address a range of problems, from reduced collagen and poor skin texture and laxity to wrinkles and sun damage.

Is Sculptra Better Than Filler?

Sculptra isn’t better than fillers, but it does produce different results than other injectables. It may be best for you if you’re interested in long-term anti-aging benefits. However, the right cosmetic treatment for you will depend on your unique skincare needs and goals. Speak with a clinician at Dallas Dermatology Partners about your skincare issues to determine if a Sculptra treatment or a different injectable might suit your needs. Sometimes, a dermatologist may recommend using Sculptra and another injectable to produce optimal results.

Sculptra vs. fillers: Comparing your treatment options

Sculptra is a type of dermal filler; however, it’s considered a separate category. Most dermal fillers, like Juvederm and Restylane, are comprised of hyaluronic acid, which naturally occurs throughout the body. When you lose volume due to aging, your skin begins to sag and develops a sunken appearance. You also start to develop fine lines and wrinkles. A dermatologist can inject a hyaluronic acid dermal filler into those areas to temporarily restore lost volume and plump up the areas affected by wrinkles.

Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid in powder form which is then reconstituted with water, which dermatologists can inject into key areas. It acts as a collagen stimulator, triggering extra collagen production to provide greater structure, volume, and support. Since it is growing the patient’s own collagen, the final result can take up to nine months to be visible.  However, improvement in skin texture can be seen as early as one month post-treatment.

Sculptra is an excellent maintenance treatment for anti-aging and is ideally combined with hyaluronic acid fillers to address areas of concern.

Sculptra Injections –  Full Face by Dr. Dickson

Which dermal filler is right for you?

Whether your dermatologist will recommend Sculptra or a hyaluronic acid dermal filler depends on your skin issues and goals. If you’re interested in getting rapid results which will be relatively short-term, then hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can be the right choice for you. On the other hand, if you’re interested in long-term results, Sculptra may be best.

When is it a good idea to use both types of cosmetic treatments?

It’s possible and often recommended to combine multiple types of injectables to produce the best results. Your dermatologist will evaluate your skin, consider your age and medical history, and discuss your goals for your appearance to determine if using both types of injectables is the right choice for you.

Since hyaluronic acid dermal fillers work produce immediate results, they can be the right choice if you desire a quick transformation. However, if you’re also interested in long-term anti-aging improvement, Sculptra can be used with another filler. The results last longer since it grows your own collagen.

Your age and amount of volume loss is another consideration. If you’re younger (e.g., in your 20s), you may want hyaluronic acid to enhance certain features such as the lips or cheeks and may decide on Sculptra for the long-term age-fighting benefits. However, if you’re in your 40s, 50s, or beyond, you may want a dermal filler like Juvederm or Restylane–for the more immediate correction of volume loss, along with Sculptra for long-term benefits.
