Cosmetic Fillers

What Is the Best Age to Start Sculptra?

The best age to start Sculptra is before you start noticing significant signs of aging, like volume loss, fine lines and wrinkles, and loss of elasticity. Many individuals wait until they are in their 40s to start a rigorous anti-aging routine that includes dermal fillers like Sculptra.

However, it’s not necessary to wait, and in fact, there are benefits to embracing an anti-aging routine much earlier in life. Talk to a dermatology provider to find out if this method of noninvasive rejuvenation could be right for you.

What If I’m Already in My 40s or Older?

If you are in your 40s or later, starting Sculptra right now is best. Like all dermal fillers, Sculptra works by plumping up the skin to minimize the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and to restore areas characterized by volume loss.

However, Sculptra also works in another way. It functions as a biostimulatory agent that triggers the bodily mechanism that produces collagen. In other words, using a Sculptra filler will convince your skin to make more of its own collagen.

Remember that collagen is one of the proteins that is essential for the health and structural integrity of the skin, and the loss of collagen is one of the main factors that causes skin to look old.

Why Start Using Sculptra Fillers Earlier in Life?

Sculptra is approved for use in people at least 18 years of age, which means you don’t have to wait until you’ve already begun to see the signs of aging. In fact, if you wait to start Sculptra until you’re 45, you will have already lost up to 25% of your youthful collagen.

Why wait to address the signs of aging when you can take a more proactive approach? Beginning Sculptra treatments by your mid-to late 20s or at least by your 30s can provide a preventive effect. Dr. Dickson prefers to start her patients as soon as those early signs of loss of elasticity and volume loss occur to slow down the aging process, preventing the need for more invasive or involved interventions later in life.

You’ll build up your skin’s stores of collagens early on, effectively delaying the effects of time, gravity, and sun damage. With Sculptra fillers, you can enjoy better definition and more youthful skin long into your later years.

“Think of it as your foundation and maintenance for anti-aging. The elixir of youth!” Dr. Lauren Dickson, Board-Certified DermatologistDr. Dickson, board certified dallas dermatologist

How Long Can Sculptra Last?

One key consideration when determining which dermal filler is right for your needs is its expected duration. Sculptra is one of the longer lasting injectables available on the market.

With each Sculptra treatment you receive, you can expect it to continue to work its magic under your skin for up to two full years.

What Else Should I Know About Sculptra?

Although Sculptra is commonly used as an anti-aging treatment for the face, this injectable has become a favorite of dermatologists and patients alike thanks to its versatility. It also recently received FDA approval for improvement in skin texture that we have always been aware of as the “Sculptra glow.”

For example, if you’ve lost a great deal of weight, you may have loose, sagging skin in areas like the jawline, knees, and upper arms. Sculptra treatments can address these issues. It can even be used for a nonsurgical butt lift or softening the appearance of the “hip dip”!

Is Sculptra Better Than Filler?

Sculptra isn’t better than fillers, but it does produce different results than other injectables. It may be best for you if you’re interested in long-term anti-aging benefits. However, the right cosmetic treatment for you will depend on your unique skincare needs and goals. Speak with a clinician at Dallas Dermatology Partners about your skincare issues to determine if a Sculptra treatment or a different injectable might suit your needs. Sometimes, a dermatologist may recommend using Sculptra and another injectable to produce optimal results.

Sculptra vs. fillers: Comparing your treatment options

Sculptra is a type of dermal filler; however, it’s considered a separate category. Most dermal fillers, like Juvederm and Restylane, are comprised of hyaluronic acid, which naturally occurs throughout the body. When you lose volume due to aging, your skin begins to sag and develops a sunken appearance. You also start to develop fine lines and wrinkles. A dermatologist can inject a hyaluronic acid dermal filler into those areas to temporarily restore lost volume and plump up the areas affected by wrinkles.

Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid in powder form which is then reconstituted with water, which dermatologists can inject into key areas. It acts as a collagen stimulator, triggering extra collagen production to provide greater structure, volume, and support. Since it is growing the patient’s own collagen, the final result can take up to nine months to be visible.  However, improvement in skin texture can be seen as early as one month post-treatment.

Sculptra is an excellent maintenance treatment for anti-aging and is ideally combined with hyaluronic acid fillers to address areas of concern.

Which dermal filler is right for you?

Whether your dermatologist will recommend Sculptra or a hyaluronic acid dermal filler depends on your skin issues and goals. If you’re interested in getting rapid results which will be relatively short-term, then hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can be the right choice for you. On the other hand, if you’re interested in long-term results, Sculptra may be best.

When is it a good idea to use both types of cosmetic treatments?

It’s possible and often recommended to combine multiple types of injectables to produce the best results. Your dermatologist will evaluate your skin, consider your age and medical history, and discuss your goals for your appearance to determine if using both types of injectables is the right choice for you.

Since hyaluronic acid dermal fillers work produce immediate results, they can be the right choice if you desire a quick transformation. However, if you’re also interested in long-term anti-aging improvement, Sculptra can be used with another filler. The results last longer since it grows your own collagen.

Your age and amount of volume loss is another consideration. If you’re younger (e.g., in your 20s), you may want hyaluronic acid to enhance certain features such as the lips or cheeks and may decide on Sculptra for the long-term age-fighting benefits. However, if you’re in your 40s, 50s, or beyond, you may want a dermal filler like Juvederm or Restylane–for the more immediate correction of volume loss, along with Sculptra for long-term benefits.
