How to Get Rid of Crepey Skin on Your Face

Genius RF microneedling is one of the most effective ways to reverse crepey skin on your face and is often called the “non-surgical facelift.” It combines the benefits of traditional microneedling with advanced radiofrequency (RF) technology to address a range of skin concerns.

Patients of all ages and skin types can benefit from the tightening power of Genius RF microneedling to drastically diminish fine lines and improve the overall experience of their skin. Some patients opt to pair Genius RF Microneedling with Sculptra for a powerful combination therapy to stimulate deeper collagen production.

Consult Dallas Dermatology Partners to see if this treatment is right for you.

How Genius RF Microneedling Works

Administered by a licensed dermatologist at Dallas Dermatology Partners, the FDA-approved Genius RF device uses ultrafine, specially insulated microneedles to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin (where collagen is produced) and create microchannels. Simultaneously, controlled radiofrequency energy is delivered to those deeper layers of skin, promoting new collagen fiber growth and elastin production and resulting in tighter, firmer, and smoother skin. The procedure typically lasts between 15 to 30 minutes.

This dual-action approach stimulates the skin’s natural healing process and promotes collagen production, improving texture, reducing fine lines, and tightening the skin. It also targets both the superficial and deeper layers of skin, creating dramatic results that last longer than other treatments.

What to Expect From A Genius RF Microneedling Treatment

Before undergoing Genius RF Microneedling at Dallas Dermatology, you’ll have a consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists. During the consultation, we will assess your skin, discuss your concerns and goals, and create a customized treatment plan tailored to your unique needs. We will also explain what to expect during and after the procedure and address any questions or concerns you may have before application.

The procedure lasts between 15 and 30 minutes, during which your skin will be penetrated by the specially insulated microneedles of the Genius RF Microneedling device. These needles are designed to penetrate the deeper layers of skin (where collagen is produced) and deliver high-intensity radiofrequency energy. The radiofrequency energy stimulates new collagen fiber growth, resulting in naturally tighter, firmer, and smoother skin. Please see an example on the knee skin tightening below.

Common Concerns

A common concern from patients is pain management. While the Genius RF device does penetrate the skin using microneedles, it is typically well-tolerated. Most patients describe the sensation as a mild prickling or tingling. Topical numbing cream may be applied before the procedure to enhance your comfort. In some cases, nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is used to relax anxious patients and increase pain tolerance. Patients can drive home after a procedure.

Following the Genius RF Microneedling treatment, you may experience mild redness and swelling, which typically subside within a few days. Our practitioners will provide post-treatment care instructions to optimize healing and results. Following these guidelines and avoiding excessive sun exposure is essential to protect your newly treated skin.

What is Crepey Skin?

Crepey skin tends to impact large areas, such as the face, neck, and décolleté area. It is characterized by noticeably thin, fragile skin that can sag and feel loose. It can occur anywhere on the body but is most prone to the delicate facial area.

Many factors can lead to crepey skin, including the following:

  • Sun Damage
  • Aging & Collagen Loss
  • Genetics
  • Extreme Weight Loss
  • Chronic Stress
  • Inflammation
  • Poor diet
  • Smoking

Whether you have crepey skin or deep-set wrinkles, Genius RF microneedling can help improve your skin’s elasticity, leading to firm, rejuvenated skin.

Does Accutane Cure Acne Forever?

Yes, Accutane acne treatment can effectively defeat severe cases. Most of the time, the results are permanent. However, there still may be breakouts, but they should be minor. However, it’s important to note that every patient reacts to medications differently. In addition, Accutane isn’t necessarily an appropriate choice for every patient.

At Dallas Dermatology Partners, we will carefully review your up-to-date medical history, including a list of medications and supplements, to determine if this treatment is a good fit for you.

What Is Accutane Acne Treatment?

Accutane is a prescription medication for severe nodulocystic acne, which isn’t like other types of acne.

It’s an inflammatory form that causes the characteristic red bumps and large, hard lumps (nodules). Nodules can persist for weeks or months and can be quite painful. Furthermore, it is associated with severe scarring. Cystic acne with nodules doesn’t clear up on its own or with standard, over-the-counter (OTC) acne products. It requires treatment from a dermatologist.

Accutane is a highly effective prescription medication for this severe type of acne. Although the brand name product, Accutane, was taken off the market, its generic form, isotretinoin, is still available.

Are Accutane Results Permanent?

Accutane doesn’t work in the same way that most acne medications do. OTC products, for example, have to be used continuously or as spot treatments, and breakouts will typically continue to occur.

In contrast, after a course of treatment with isotretinoin, most patients will never see a severe breakout of nodulocystic acne again, and many enjoy complete, permanent clearing of acne.

However, these patients may experience mild breakouts from time to time, such as whiteheads and blackheads. These non-nodulocystic acne breakouts can be addressed with topical medications.

It is possible, though not typical, for some patients to experience a breakout of nodulocystic acne after completing their course of Accutane. If this happens to you, your dermatologist may recommend a second course of isotretinoin treatment to permanently clear up your acne.

What to Expect From Accutane Treatment

Isotretinoin is a highly effective medication, but it’s important to follow the dermatologist’s dosage instructions carefully. In most cases, our team prescribes a course of treatment that lasts four to five months. Sometimes, we may recommend six months.

Please let your dermatologist know if you experience troublesome side effects while taking Accutane. You may need a lower dosage of the medication. Even at a lower dosage, however, isotretinoin is still highly effective and can result in permanent skin clearing of severe acne.

How to Get Rid of Cystic Acne According To A Dermatologist

Cystic acne can seriously impact self-esteem. Characterized by inflammation deep in the skin, these large cysts are painful. If ignored, it can take weeks to disappear and may even leave behind scars. If you’re looking for effective cystic acne treatment, read on to find out what dermatologists recommend to target the cause and prevent future breakouts.

cystic acne treatment

What is Cystic Acne?

Cystic acne is the most severe form of acne that causes tender, fluid-filled cysts to form deep under the skin. Unlike pimples that contain a core of dead skin cells and pus, cystic acne cannot be popped, and any picking will usually cause trauma, more inflammation, and scarring.

Cystic acne typically shows up on the face but can also develop on the shoulders, chest, back, and neck. An acne cyst starts as a tender bump under the skin and may resemble a boil. These oil and bacteria-filled cysts will grow bigger and more inflamed over time. Therefore, early treatment is crucial when it comes to helping the skin recover.

What Causes Cystic Acne?

There is no single cause of cystic acne, but like all types of blemishes, the problem starts with a clogged pore. When dead skin cells, bacteria, and oils get trapped in the sebaceous glands, the result is inflammation and a tender, infected lump. In addition, certain cosmetics and skincare products can clog pores, increasing the chances of a flare-up.

Genetics is another factor to consider. If your parents and older siblings had cystic acne at some point, there is a high likelihood that you will also develop it.

Perhaps the biggest culprit for cystic acne breakouts is fluctuating hormones. Surges in testosterone and estrogen during puberty can cause cystic acne, as can hormonal changes during pregnancy, menstrual cycles, and menopause. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) creates excess androgen hormones that can also cause it.

It is not caused by poor dietary choices, though some foods may trigger inflammation more than others. If you notice a link between certain meals and acne breakouts, let your dermatologist know.

How to Treat Cystic Acne?

Home remedies and over-the-counter products are rarely effective for managing cystic acne. So, if you’ve tried everything and are wondering how to get rid of it, it’s time to see a board-certified dermatologist who can prescribe a personalized treatment plan.

There is no one-size-fits-all treatment for it. Instead, your dermatologist will determine the best course of action after determining the underlying causes of your acne.

A cystic acne treatment plan may incorporate one or several of these therapies:

  • Prescription antibiotics such as doxycycline taken orally to address infection and inflammation
  • Corticosteroid injections that quickly shrink cysts
  • Spironolactone oral medication to clear up hormone-related cystic acne
  • Oral retinoids to reduce oil gland secretions
  • Birth control pills to regulate hormones that trigger acne cysts
  • Topical retinoid creams or gels to encourage skin exfoliation

Can QWO Get Rid of Cellulite on Thighs?

Qwo is a cutting-edge injectable that has been FDA-approved for reducing cellulite in the buttocks. Here at Dallas Dermatology Partners, many of our patients ask if Qwo can also be used to treat dimpling and orange peel texture on their “saddlebags.” The answer is yes! With precise injections and lower dosages, our dermatologists can treat cellulite in the thighs and buttocks. While Qwo thigh treatment is technically off-label, it is a simple and safe procedure when performed by a skilled dermatologist.

cellulite on thighs and butt

What is Qwo?

Qwo is an enzymatic solution that breaks down collagen that accumulates in the fibrous septa. These dense bands are responsible for creating the dimpled or cottage cheese-like surface typical of cellulite.

Qwo for thighs treatment

Our patients love Qwo cellulite treatment because it’s non-invasive, virtually painless, and produces amazing results for smoothing contour irregularities caused by cellulite.
Our dermatologists will mark the injection sites on your thighs and apply a topical anesthetic cream to minimize discomfort. Qwo injections in thighs are gentler and less painful than Botox– thanks to the extra padding in this area. We inject each cellulite dimple, and the entire procedure is over in around 10 minutes.

Side effects of QWO cellulite treatment on thighs

The risk of adverse side effects after getting Qwo on thighs is minimal. The most common side effects are temporary redness and soreness at the injection site and itching. These issues usually resolve within two days, and any bruising will fade over the following week.

Qwo downtime

After having Qwo injections in the thighs, patients can expect mild soreness that can be alleviated with ibuprofen or acetaminophen. For the most part, you can resume normal activities and even hit the gym. In this regard, there is no recovery or downtime after a Qwo treatment.

When will thigh cellulite go away?

You may note improvements as soon as one month after your Qwo injections. Expect to see smoother, dimple-free skin on your thighs about 2-3 months after the treatment. Remember that it takes time for the enzymes to break down the fibrous bands. Most of our patients benefit from two or three Qwo sessions.

How long does QWO thigh cellulite treatment last?

Qwo addresses the root of cellulite and is designed to be a long-lasting– if not permanent– treatment. Since Qwo is new to the market, anecdotal evidence on the longevity of results is still being determined. However, early studies have been promising, and after two or three sessions of this powerful injectable, you will probably be cellulite-free for the rest of your life.

Qwo thigh cellulite treatment in Dallas

Summer is just around the corner, and if leg and thigh cellulite is keeping you out of your favorite shorts and swimwear, now is the time to book your Dallas Dermatology appointment. With our expert guidance and technique, you can be beach-ready and confident in just a few short months.

Can You Get Rid of Cellulite?

Women are much more prone than men to develop cellulite, which develops when connective cords that tether the skin to muscle pull down or stretch, pushing underlying fat cells against the skin. The result is a puckered or dimpled appearance that typically shows up on the buttocks and outer thighs.

While there is a genetic component to cellulite, there is no single cause. However, as producers of the fat-storing hormone estrogen, over 90 percent of women are predisposed to this common problem. It doesn’t matter if you’re heavy or thin, exercise daily, or adhere to a strict vegan diet– you can develop these pesky dimples on the lower body– and there’s no shame in wanting to get rid of it.

If cellulite on the thighs and buttocks is bothersome, you’re not alone. Can you get rid of cellulite completely? Unfortunately, no. But there are some effective, non-surgical procedures, such as QWO, at Dallas Dermatology Partners that can reduce it and improve the appearance of puckered and uneven skin.

cellulite on thighs and butt

Cellulite treatment for legs & buttocks

Diet and exercise have their place but do little for smoothing contour irregularities on the buttocks and legs caused by dense fibrous bands. For a smoother derriere, we turn to QWO (Collagenase Clostridium Histolyticum) — the first FDA-approved injectable to treat moderate to severe cellulite. Our dermatologists are thrilled to offer QWO cellulite treatment to minimize contour irregularities on the buttocks and upper thighs.

before and after qwo

How does QWO reduce cellulite?

QWO contains two powerful enzymes that break down the collagen fibers in the septae (fibrous bands) that produce the dimpled appearance of cellulite. These enzymes also stimulate collagen production that improves the integrity and smoothness of the skin.

The injections feel like a bee-sting and take around 15 minutes. There is little to no downtime, and optimal results are seen after 3 treatments, spaced 21 days apart. Bruising, redness, and tenderness are the most common side effects of QWO cellulite treatment for thighs and buttocks.

Ideal candidates for QWO treatment

Our board-certified dermatologists know how to treat cellulite on legs and buttocks and can determine the best candidates for QWO injections. Generally speaking, those with pronounced dimples caused by fibrous strands rather than loose skin are good candidates for this non-invasive treatment.

Skin laxity vs. cellulite

The injectable does not address skin laxity that can mimic the wavy appearance of cellulite. How do you differentiate between age-related loose skin and true cellulite? Lift the skin from the indentation or depression. If the dimple disappears, it is not cellulite.

If skin laxity is the issue, our dermatologists can address this with Genius RF microneedling that combines the benefits of traditional microneedling with fractional radiofrequency energy. In fact, microneedling for tightening skin is safe, non-surgical, and produces noticeable results within a few sessions.

Is Emsculpt Better Than CoolSculpting?

Emsculpt uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to induce powerful muscle contractions. CoolSculpting primarily focuses on fat reduction and does not significantly affect muscle tone. Emsculpt NEO, available at Dallas Dermatology Partners, enhances this process by combining HIFEM with radiofrequency (RF) energy for even greater fat reduction and muscle toning.

Understanding Emsculpt and CoolSculpting

As noted, Emsculpt uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to induce powerful muscle contractions. These supramaximal contractions build muscle and burn fat simultaneously. Emsculpt NEO, available at Dallas Dermatology Partners, enhances this process by combining HIFEM with radiofrequency (RF) energy for even greater fat reduction and muscle toning.

CoolSculpting, on the other hand, employs cryolipolysis, a process that freezes fat cells to the point where they break down and are naturally eliminated by the body. CoolSculpting primarily focuses on fat reduction and does not significantly affect muscle tone.

Efficacy: Muscle Toning and Fat Reduction

Emsculpt offers a unique advantage over CoolSculpting by addressing both fat reduction and muscle toning. Clinical studies have shown that Emsculpt can increase muscle mass by up to 16% and reduce fat by 19% after a series of treatments. In contrast, CoolSculpting targets only fat cells, typically reducing fat by about 20% in the treated area.

By combining HIFEM and RF energy, Emsculpt NEO provides even more impressive results. The RF energy heats fat cells, making them more susceptible to the effects of the HIFEM contractions, thereby enhancing fat reduction while simultaneously building muscle.

Treatment Experience

The treatment experience also differs significantly between Emsculpt and CoolSculpting. Emsculpt sessions are relatively quick, lasting about 30 minutes per area. Patients often describe the sensation as a good workout without the sweat. There is no downtime, and normal activities can be resumed immediately after treatment.

CoolSculpting sessions are longer, usually taking about an hour per area. Patients might feel intense cold and tugging during the procedure, followed by numbness. Some temporary side effects include swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the treated area, and it can take several weeks to see the full results.

Does Emsculpt Flatten Your Stomach?

Yes, Emsculpt can flatten your stomach. Unlike traditional exercise routines that primarily target fat reduction, Emsculpt focuses on muscle building and toning by delivering high-intensity electromagnetic (HIFEM) pulses to the muscles, causing them to contract rapidly and repeatedly. These contractions are known as supramaximal contractions, meaning they are stronger and more intense than the contractions generated during typical exercise routines.

By stimulating muscle contractions beyond what is possible with physical exercise alone, Emsculpt not only strengthens and tones the abdominal muscles but also promotes muscle growth and definition. This results in a tighter, more sculpted appearance, effectively flattening the stomach and enhancing overall abdominal contours.

Enjoy These Benefits with Emsculpt

One of the key advantages of Emsculpt is its ability to target both the superficial and deep muscle layers of the abdomen, including the rectus abdominis (the “six-pack” muscles) and the obliques, for comprehensive abdominal sculpting. This comprehensive approach allows for more effective muscle building and toning, resulting in noticeable improvements in muscle definition and overall body contour.

In addition to its muscle-building benefits, Emsculpt has also been shown to stimulate fat metabolism in the treated area. This means that not only does Emsculpt help to build and tone muscles, but it can also help to reduce stubborn fat deposits, empowering clients with an even more sculpted and defined appearance.

Overall, Emsculpt offers a safe, non-invasive, and highly effective solution for individuals looking to enhance their physique and improve muscle tone. Whether you’re looking to sculpt your abs, lift and tone your buttocks, or define your arms and thighs, Emsculpt can help you achieve your aesthetic goals without the need for surgery or downtime.

This is also an effective and non-invasive treatment for Diastasis Recti, a condition commonly associated with pregnancy and affects many postpartum women. Diastasis Recti, is the separation of abdominal muscles and often is described as an “ab gap” with the appearance of a ridge running down the middle of the belly. These abdominal muscles can be weakened after pregnancy, due to the uterus expanding and pushing against the stomach wall, ultimately causing your abdominal muscles to widen.

This advanced technology stimulates intense muscle contractions, helping to strengthen and tighten weakened abdominal muscles. By gradually restoring muscle strength and elasticity, EmSculpt Neo reduces the separation caused by diastasis recti without requiring downtime.

What to Expect During an Emsculpt Procedure

During an Emsculpt treatment session, a specialized device is placed over the targeted area, such as the abdomen or buttocks. The device emits electromagnetic pulses that penetrate through the skin and fat layers, directly stimulating the underlying muscles. As a result, the muscles contract in a way that is not achievable through voluntary muscle actions.

These intense muscle contractions trigger a series of physiological responses within the muscles, including rapid remodeling and growth. Over time, this leads to increased muscle mass, strength, and tone in the treated area.

When Will I Start Seeing Results?

Results can vary by patient, with most patients noticing peak results around three months after their first body contouring treatment while some may see noticeable changes right away.

For the fastest and best results from your treatment with Emsculpt Neo in Dallas, it’s recommended to complete four 30-minute sessions within two weeks. It’s also important to follow details of your treatment plan provided to you by your dermatologist. Be sure to stay hydrated before and after your procedure, and follow all post-treatment instructions.

It’s important to note that Emsculpt should be regarded as a supplement to a healthy lifestyle, which includes regular physical activity and a balanced diet. It cannot replace the health benefits that come from an active lifestyle and balanced diet.

SKINVIVE™ for Acne Scars

Acne is among the most common skin issues, and unfortunately, it doesn’t always leave without a trace. Often, acne leaves behind telltale scars and dark spots that can create a patchwork of pockmarks across the face.

When you’re ready to say “sayonara” to those unwanted acne scars, talk to one of our dermatologists about Skinvive™. It’s one of the latest revolutionary treatments by Juvéderm—and you’re going to love how it will transform your complexion.

What Exactly Is SKINVIVE™?

Skinvive™ is the first and only FDA-approved hyaluronic acid microdroplet injectable. Of course, there are plenty of other hyaluronic acid injectables out there, but only Skinvive™ uses microdroplet technology. (Unlike other such injectables, Skinvive™ is used as a skin rejuvenator, rather than a volumizer.)

Skinvive™’s microdroplets are placed just beneath the surface of the skin. They dramatically plump up the skin by pulling in and holding onto an enormous amount of moisture—up to 1,000 times their own molecular weight!

Not only can Skinvive™ moisturize your skin from the inside out, but it also plumps up depressed areas—like those pesky acne scars. The result is a dramatic improvement in the appearance of your acne scars and, overall, enviable skin smoothness and texture.

How Quickly Does SKINVIVE™ Help with Acne Scars?

Before you book your appointment for Skinvive™ in Dallas, you might have some questions about the treatment. One of the most common questions we hear involves how quickly the treatment works.

Every patient’s experience is a little different, of course, but you should notice some signs of improvement fairly soon after your first treatment. As the microdroplets continue to work their magic under the surface of your skin, your acne scars will gradually plump up and your skin texture will smooth out further.

You’ll notice more dramatic results after a week or two, and the full results will be visible within four weeks. This is about how long it typically takes for the microdroplets to become fully integrated.

severe adult acne

How Long Does SKINVIVE™ Last?

Like many other hyaluronic acid injectables, Skinvive™ is long-lasting, but the results aren’t permanent. This acne scar treatment has been clinically proven to last up to six months. After that point, you can schedule another appointment with our clinicians to receive touch-up treatments.

Is SKINVIVE™ Right for All Skin Types and Tones?

Absolutely! This acne scar treatment was clinically studied and proven effective and safe for patients with all skin types and all tones.

Where Can SKINVIVE™ Be Used?

Skinvive™ is FDA-approved to treat skincare concerns in the cheeks. However, dermatologists may be able to use it on an off-label basis for acne scars in other treatment areas. Consult your dermatologist for more information.

Is SKINVIVE™ Right for You?

Not every treatment is right for every patient. At Dallas Dermatology Partners, our innovative clinicians focus on crafting fully customized treatment plans based on your aesthetic goals, treatment preferences, and medical history.

You don’t have to live with embarrassing acne scars any longer. Contact us today to schedule your Dallas dermatology appointment and get a customized treatment plan that works for you.

A Look Into Accutane Side Effects

Accutane, or isotretinoin, is a retinoid medication prescribed for treating severe, nodular, or cystic acne that doesn’t respond well to less aggressive treatments. It’s also helpful for treating blackheads and whiteheads and controlling skin oil production. Since it can cause some side effects, such as the Accutane purge, at Dallas Dermatology Partners, we ensure that we have your complete medical history and that you are fully informed. Accutane not only helps with cystic acne but also oil production, blackheads and whiteheads, resulting in clear, smooth skin.

The Accutane Purge

As noted, one of the possible side effects of Accutane acne treatment is the Accutane purge. It doesn’t happen to every patient, but it is a possibility. When a patient first takes isotretinoin, the skin can experience a flare-up, leading to a severe acne breakout. Usually, this occurs within the first month of using Accutane, and it may last several weeks. After the initial flare-up, your symptoms should subside, and your skin should begin to clear up considerably.

If you experience an Accutane purge, call your dermatologist to discuss it. In some cases, additional medications may be available to help mitigate the effects, or your dermatologist may recommend switching to a lower dose of Accutane while your body adjusts to it.

hormonal acne treatment

Other Possible Accutane Side Effects

Even if you don’t experience the Accutane purge, it’s still possible to experience other side effects while on this treatment. These side effects won’t affect everyone who uses it, and serious side effects are rare and may include the following:

  • Dryness of the skin, nose, lips, or eyes
  • Mild itching or skin rash
  • Headaches
  • Dry mouth or throat
  • Muscle aches

If you experience any of the above, our clinicians at Dallas Dermatology Partners are here to answer any questions you may have. Overall, most patients are unlikely to experience serious side effects. In fact, one of our board-certified dermatologists, Dr. Lauren Dickson, has used Accutane herself with excellent results.

Results and Aftercare

Accutane is a powerful medication used on a short-term basis. Most people take it for six to eight months. You may begin seeing results as early as one month. Many people may never need to take Accutane again because it is the closest thing to a permanent cure for acne that we have. Others report complete relief from cystic acne after a second course of isotretinoin. Rarely, others may require a third course.

Following your aftercare recommendations can help you enjoy optimal results. Our dermatologists recommend a skincare regimen including gentle skin cleanser, liberal amounts of skin moisturizer, and sunscreen.

Explore Innovative Acne Treatments in Dallas

Dallas Dermatology Partners is a leading provider of innovative treatments for common skin concerns, including cystic acne. Our acne dermatologist in Dallas will carefully review your medical history to determine if Accutane could be an appropriate treatment for you.
