The Importance of Annual Skin Checks and Skin Cancer Screenings

Regular skin checks and skin cancer screenings are vital in maintaining long-term skin health. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, but when detected early, it is also among the most treatable.

A full-body skin check allows a dermatologist to identify new growths or monitor existing moles for any changes that may signal early signs of skin cancer. These screenings are especially important for individuals with risk factors like fair skin, a history of sunburns, extensive sun exposure, or a family history of skin cancer.

Beyond cancer detection, annual skin checks help catch other issues that may go unnoticed in their early stages. Many skin issues—such as precancerous lesions, atypical moles, or chronic sun damage—develop gradually and without symptoms.

A professional exam ensures that subtle but important changes are documented and, if necessary, investigated further. Whether or not you’ve noticed anything unusual, these yearly evaluations provide peace of mind and support early intervention when needed.

Signs You Need a Skin Cancer Screening

Not every skin change is cause for alarm, but certain signs should prompt a closer look by a dermatologist.

The warning signs of precancerous and cancerous skin lesions may include:

  • A mole that changes in size, shape, or color
  • A pearly or waxy bump
  • A flesh-colored or brown scar-like lesion
  • A raised growth or lump with a central depression
  • A firm, red nodule
  • A crusted, flat lesion

Regular self-examinations and professional screenings are essential for catching potential issues early. If you notice any of the following changes, it may be time to schedule a skin cancer screening.

What to Expect During the Skin Cancer Screening Process

A skin cancer screening is a straightforward, non-invasive procedure designed to give you peace of mind and ensure your skin is healthy. During the exam, a board-certified dermatologist will perform a head-to-toe visual inspection of your skin, including areas that may not typically be exposed to the sun.

You’ll be asked to change into a gown, and your dermatologist may use a special magnifying tool called a dermatoscope to get a closer look at certain spots or moles. The process is generally painless and takes only about 10 to 20 minutes, depending on how many moles or marks you have.

If anything appears unusual, they may take a photograph for monitoring or recommend a biopsy—a simple procedure in which a small sample of skin is removed for lab analysis. Not all biopsies result in a cancer diagnosis; many are precautionary.

You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss any skin concerns. Overall, the goal is early detection and reassurance, and many people find the screening both informative and empowering. You can talk to your doctor about a skin care regimen if you would like.
