Lip Filler

Lip enhancement with hyaluronic acid filler is a popular non-invasive treatment. Dallas Dermatology Partners offers lip filler treatments that are customized to the desires and anatomy of each patient. Lip injections and cosmetic filler treatments can produce subtle or dramatic results aligned with individual goals.

Our board-certified dermatologists use hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers to augment and enhance the lips. This sugar derivative holds 1,000 times its own weight in water and can be safely dissolved with an enzyme if patients aren’t pleased with their results. Patient age and anatomy will dictate the type of filler used, though each adds shape, structure, and volume to the soft tissue of the lips:

  • Juvéderm
  • Juvéderm Volbella and Ultra
  • Restylane
  • Restylane Silk
  • Belotero Balance

Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced by the body and is therefore biocompatible, with minimal risk of allergic reaction. HA causes less bruising, swelling, lumps, and bumps than collagen and other types of fillers. Your dermatologist can control the amount of volume created with small injections to achieve a soft, pillowy look without being overfilled.

Dermal filler injections do more than pump up the volume of naturally thin lips. This treatment can also be used to:

  • Correct mild asymmetry in lip shape
  • Create more definition at the Cupid’s bow and lip border
  • Achieve a more feminine pout
  • Minimize the appearance of fine lines around and within the lips
  • Restore balance to upper and lower lips
  • Create more hydrated appearing lips

The most common side effects of lip fillers include mild bruising, swelling, and tenderness. Small lumps may develop, but these should smooth out on their own in a few days. Stubborn lumps can be dissolved by your dermatologist using an enzyme injection.

The body metabolizes hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers over time. Depending on the type of product used, the results can last anywhere from six to nine months. Patients who love their initial results are encouraged to take photos to be used as an example for future treatments.

Lip fillers are not the same as a Botox lip flip, which uses neuromodulators like Botox or Dysport to relax the muscle above the Cupid’s bow for a fuller or poutier look.

The entire procedure takes around 20 minutes to complete. A prescription-strength numbing gel is placed on the lips to minimize discomfort. Those who are anxious about the treatment may receive a dental nerve block.

Patients should expect a mild pinch from the needle and pressure during the injections. Once the filler is in place, the lips are gently massaged to ensure no bumps have formed. A cold pack is placed on the injection sites for several minutes to reduce swelling.

What to Expect After Lip Fillers

Immediate gratification is one of the upsides of lip filler, as patients can see more defined and sculpted lips right away. Swelling and soreness are normal and usually subside within 2-4 days.

Lip Injections Aftercare

There is little to no downtime after the procedure, making this an ideal lunch hour treatment. While patients can resume most normal activities, there are few aftercare tips:

  • Apply Aquaphor Lip Repair or similar ointment as directed
  • Use cold packs to minimize swelling
  • Avoid blood-thinning medication and aspirin for 24 hours
  • No firm pressure on the lips for 7 days
